This will be the first meeting between the two powerhouse programs since 2015. In that contest, Shea Patterson and Tony Jones led IMG Academy to a 59-47 win despite a huge game from Jarrett Guarantano, who completed 30 of 38 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns to go with 64 yards rushing and another score.
The only other MaxPreps Top 25 matchup this week is No. 25 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) hosting No. 15 St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia) on Saturday. The Buckeye State's three-time defending Division I champs opened the season with a 28-0 win over Pickerington North (Pickerington, Ohio). The visiting Philadelphia school has won back-to-back Class 6A state titles and are riding a 13-game win streak.
Ryder Lyons and No. 23 Folsom (Calif.) rolled to a dominant 63-20 win over Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) last week and face a huge test against Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) on Friday. The Padres have been the best team in Northern California since 2021 and have beaten Folsom in each of the past two seasons.
Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.) had one of the biggest wins last week with a 28-14 victory against Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio). Up next is a huge in-state showdown against DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.), which brings back plenty of talent and has eyes on its first WCAC title since 2016.
Read on for a complete look at this week's biggest games
IMG Academy: WR Donovan Olugbode (6-1, 200), OL Keenyi Pepe (6-7, 295), OL Michael Carroll (6-6, 315), QB Ty Hawkins (6-0, 195), RB Tranard Roberts (6-0, 180)
Bergen Catholic: WR Quincy Porter (6-3, 190), DB Jordan Thomas (6-0, 175), DL Jermaine Kinsler (6-7, 250), DB Naiim Parrish (5-11, 165), RB Najee Calhoun (5-10, 190)
IMG Academy is trying to avoid making history with an 0-2 start. The last time the Ascenders lost two games in a season was 2013, the program's inaugural campaign. Hawkins, committed to SMU, completed 17 of 23 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns against Corner Canyon in his IMG debut. Bergen Catholic has finished ranked in the MaxPreps Top 25 in each of the last three seasons and have gone 34-2 since 2021.
Serra: OL Lemani Fehoko (6-1, 280), OL Louis Akpa (6-6, 260), DB Jermaine Barrett (6-0, 170), OL Elias Shamieh (6-3, 300), DB Teddy Chung (6-0, 185)
Folsom: QB Ryder Lyons (6-2, 215), WR Jameson Powell (5-10, 170), ATH Nela Tupou (6-4, 220), DL Theo Greule (6-2, 250), WR Isaiah Williams (6-0, 170)
If Folsom wants to show it is the best team in Northern California this is the game to prove it. Serra has represented Northern California in the Open Division state title game in each of the last three years. Lyons started his junior campaign throwing for 182 yards and two touchdowns to go with 95 yards rushing and another score. This will be the third straight year these two NorCal powers face off. Serra won 17-12 in 2022 and held on for a 21-14 victory last season.
DeMatha: RB Bud Coombs (5-10, 190), QB Denzel Gardner (6-0, 200), WR Lavar Keys (5-11, 170), LB Noah Chambers (6-2, 215), LB Jermaine Minnis (6-1, 210)
Archbishop Spalding: QB Malik Washington (6-4, 215), WR Myles McAfee (5-11, 165), DB Jayden Shipps (6-1, 180), DB Alijah Jones (6-0, 175), DL Delmar White (6-1, 285)
The winner of this one could jump into the MaxPreps Top 25 soon. The Stags are No. 32 in our expanded top 100 and the Cavs took a huge leap after last week's 28-14 win over Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio). They moved up 51 spots to No. 35. This will be the season-opener for DeMatha.
Rome: LB Jaedon Harmon (6-1, 215), DB Rae Sykes Jr. (6-2, 190), WR Tinerious Stallings (5-9, 160), RB Chance Arthur (6-0, 215), WR J.J. Winston (6-3, 145)
Carrollton: QB Julian Lewis (6-1, 175), WR Ryan Mosley (6-3, 190), DB Zelus Hicks (6-3, 190), DB Shamar Arnoux (6-3, 185), DB Dorian Barney (6-1, 175)
This will be the first game of the season for Rome after having to cancel its opener against Creekside (Fairburn) after the team bus crashed. Luckily, there were no serious injuries and attention has turned to producing an upset win at Carrollton. The Trojans are clicking on both sides of the ball. Lewis enters Friday night's matchup with 400 yards passing and seven touchdowns while completing over 70 percent of his passes through his first two games.
